Tony Benford had a laundry list of phone calls to make after he took over as the head coach at North Texas this spring.
Tony Nunn wasn’t quite up there with the assistant coaches Benford hired or the movers, but he wasn’t too far down the list.
The 6-8 center/power forward from Salisbury, N.C., quickly built a relationship with UNT’s new staff once Benford got in touch with him and this week became the second player to commit to sign with the Mean Green for its 2013 class.
Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day recruits in the class of 2013 can sign is Nov. 14, the first day of the early signing period.
“UNT has great coaches and a great program,” Nunn said of his reason for committing to play for the Mean Green via text message.
UNT advanced to the Sun Belt Conference finals for the third straight season last year and is expected to have one of its best teams in school history this fall.
UNT has five seniors on the roster, plus Tony Mitchell, a 6-8 forward who is expected to declare for the NBA draft after the upcoming season.
Four of UNT’s seniors are frontcourt players the Mean Green will have to replace along with Mitchell.
Nunn could be a key part of that plan that will also include incoming freshman Keith Coleman, a 6-10 center.
“I will fit in as a four [power forward] or five [center],” Nunn said.
Nunn said he chose UNT over offers from East Carolina, Cincinnati, Charlotte and Jacksonville.
Nunn is the second player to commit to UNT for its 2013 class. UNT picked up a commitment from Anthony Norris, a combo forward from Midland College, a two-year school, earlier this spring.
