Soccer: Early goals hold up in UNT victory

MONROE, La. — The Mean Green scored twice in just over a minute’s time in the first half and is 2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference after defeating the Warhawks on Sunday.

UNT (7-3-1) defeated Louisiana-Lafayette on the road Friday to win the first two games in SBC play for the third time in four years.

Junior defender Kelsey Hodges opened the scoring for the Mean Green in the 20th minute, knocking in a penalty kick for her seventh goal of the season and matching her season total from a year ago.

Just over a minute later, senior forward Michelle Young headed in her third goal of the season off a pass by freshman midfielder Karla Pineda to put the Mean Green up 2-0. Pineda’s assist was her fourth of the season, and her second in as many games.

ULM (3-7-0, 0-1-0) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 26th minute, when Karlea Fehr took a pass from Cerene Arsenault and outran the UNT defense to score her third goal of the season.

That was the only score against Mean Green goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine, who made made five saves to pick up her seventh win of the season.

North Texas returns to action Friday to play SBC rival South Alabama in the first game of a four-game homestand.
