Women’s tennis: UNT 6, Old Dominion 1

North Texas won its first home match of the season Saturday, defeating Old Dominion at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

The No. 54 Mean Green continued its trend of taking the doubles point to jump to an early lead. UNT’s Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer led Diana Ivanova and Nikol Hristova 6-3 when the Mean Green secured the doubles point.

UNT duo Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova won the No. 2 doubles match against Juliana Pires and Melissa Esnal Olguin 8-1. The Mean Green’s Ilona Serchenko and Dané Joubert defeated Nika Khmolovska and Faith Atiso 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.

The Mean Green won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Bardabush led the pack, defeating Diana Ivanova 6-3, 6-0 to increase UNT’s lead to 2-0.

Starkova defeated Ivana Vukovic 6-4, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, while Vykydalova clinched the win for North Texas by defeating Hristova 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot.

“My doubles match built my confidence for my singles match and gave me more of an advantage,” Serchenko said after she defeated Esnal Olguin 6-3, 7-5. “I didn’t get nervous because I had a win already.”

Sprinkmeyer battled Pires in No. 4 singles, ultimately losing 2-6, 7-6, 9-11. UNT’s Agustina Valezuela defeated Khmolovska 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot in the first singles match of her career.

North Texas returns to action at 11 a.m. today against visiting Lamar.
