Softball: UNT beats Memphis, falls to Horns

AUSTIN — North Texas won its season opener 6-2 against Memphis on Friday at the Texas Classic, then lost 9-1 to No. 7 Texas.

UNT’s Ashley Kirk (1-0) pitched a one-hit shutout through six innings against Memphis. She gave up two runs off three hits in the seventh. She pitched four perfect innings before giving up a hit in the fifth. She struck out six and walked three.

The Mean Green bats started clicking in the third with two runs, and it added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth. UNT outhit the Tigers 9-4.

UNT’s Paige Kisling led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Lesley Hirsch went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Brooke Foster hit an RBI double.

Against Texas, Brittany Simmons (0-1) gave up six unearned, two-out runs in the second inning. Outside of that inning, Simmons gave up two runs on six hits. The senior pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on 11 hits.

Texas outhit the Mean Green 13-3.

Taylor Schoblocher posted two hits, with a double in the fourth that scored Dani Hoff.

For UT, Holly Kern gave up one earned run and three hits in her first career start. She struck out six.

Four UNT freshmen started against Memphis and Texas. UNT is 7-3 in season openers, 2-1 all-time against Memphis and 1-9 against the Longhorns.

Today, UNT faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 10 a.m.
