Mean Green moves into final slated for Longhorn Network
AUSTIN — North Texas went 2-0 on the second day of the Texas Classic and advanced to today’s championship game against No. 7 Texas. The Mean Green defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 11-3 and Memphis 9-1 on Saturday at McCombs Field.
The Mean Green scored early and then sealed both victories in five innings on the run rule. UNT improved to 3-1 for its best start through four games.
Tori Bice made her first career start against A&M-Corpus Christi and picked up her first win, and Brittany Simmons (1-1) shut out Memphis through four innings before giving up an unearned run in the fifth.
In each game, UNT scored four runs in the first inning. Sarah McGann ended the second game against Memphis with a solo home run to left field in the fifth. It was her first career home run and the Mean Green’s first of the season.
Against A&M-Corpus Christi, Bice gave up three runs and three hits and walked six in three innings. The freshman struck out four.
In the third inning, Bice walked three, leading to two runs. The freshman gave up a home run to start the fourth and loaded the bases before being relieved by Lauren Poole. Poole pitched two innings and gave up no hits.
UNT got off to a quick start when Jackie Miller hit her first career triple, a two-run shot to right field. Miller then scored on an illegal pitch, and Jordan Terry hit an RBI single.
The Islanders responded with runs in the third and fourth innings, but the Mean Green scored in the third, fourth and fifth.
UNT’s Taylor Schoblocher hit an RBI single in the third. Brooke Foster hit a two-run triple in the fourth. Foster went 2 for 3 in the game.
Against Memphis, Lesley Hirsch led off the game with a double, Foster and Schoblocher walked and Terry hit a three-run double to left-center. Dani Hoff drove in Terry with a single over second base.
Hoff plated a run in the third with a bases-loaded single up the middle. Karly Williams knocked in two to put North Texas ahead 7-0.
UNT’s Jennifer Beardsley had a pinch-hit RBI single in the fourth before McGann ended it with her leadoff homer.

On Friday, UNT beat Memphis 6-2 but lost to the Longhorns 9-1.
