Softball: Baylor overpowers UNT in Shootout final

SAN MARCOS — North Texas homered twice Sunday but it was not enough to hold off No. 25 Baylor in the championship game of the Texas Shootout, as the Bears won 9-3 at Bobcat Stadium.

The Mean Green (7-9) went 3-2 in the Shootout, with both losses coming against Baylor (15-2).

Leading off for just the second time this season, UNT’s Brooke Foster started the game with a home run. She became the third Mean Green player in history to lead off a game with a homer.

Baylor responded when Kaitlyn Thumann hit a leadoff home run off Tori Bice in the bottom of the first. Holly Holl gave Baylor the lead in the third with a two-run homer.

Down 4-1, UNT’s Karly Williams hit a solo home run in the fourth. It was the first homer of her career.

Baylor answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs off two hits and an error. The Bears scored three more runs in the sixth.

Foster knocked in her second run of the game with a double in the seventh inning.

UNT finished with six hits.

Whitney Canion earned the win, allowing three runs and six hits and striking out 13 in seven innings of work.

Bice (2-1) gave up three runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings.

In its two games against Baylor, UNT hit three home runs but struck out 24 times.

Jordan Terry led the Mean Green in the tournament with two home runs, a double and five RBIs. North Texas hit six home runs after entering the weekend with just two.

North Texas will return to San Marcos next weekend for the CenturyLink Classic.
