Softball: UNT wins two in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS — Ashley Kirk tied her own North Texas record with 14 strikeouts in a 7-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday at the CenturyLink Classic. Brooke Foster then tied a UNT mark when she knocked in five runs in a 7-5 win over Texas State.

The Mean Green posted a season-high 11 hits against the Islanders. Jackie Miller had three hits, including a two-run homer.

Kirk (4-3) allowed one earned run and five hits in seven innings.

In the second inning, Foster tied the game at 1 with a single. Jordan Terry gave UNT the lead with a two-run single. Miller added a two-run homer in the third.

Against the Bobcats, Terry hit a two-run homer in the top of the first. Foster later made it 5-1 with a three-run homer.

Foster knocked in her fourth run of the game in the fourth with a double. The run proved to be crucial for UNT, as Courtney Harris hit a grand slam off Mean Green starter Tori Bice in the fifth.

Foster posted her fifth RBI in the sixth with a sacrifice fly for the final margin.

Brittany Simmons picked up her third save of the season, holding Texas State scoreless for two innings. Bice earned her third win, pitching five innings and giving up five runs and four hits.

Today, UNT (9-9) faces Purdue at 10 a.m. and Texas State at 3 p.m.
