Tennis: UNT whips Tyler Junior College

North Texas moved to 12-5 on the season after sweeping Tyler Junior College on Thursday at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

“We were just happy to get a match in today and work on our game,” UNT coach Sujay Lama said. “With a few of our matches being canceled due to rain, the challenge has been to stay sharp.”

The Mean Green took an early lead, winning all three doubles matches. Franziska Sprinkmeyer paired with Agustina Valenzuela to win 8-2 at the No. 3 position. Dane Joubert and Ilona Serchenko moved into the No. 2 position to defeat Kylie Reynaud and Kerry Wiegand. Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova defeated Kirsten Pierce and Alejandra Enderica 8-2 at the No. 1 spot.

UNT’s Ilona Serchenko defeated Pierce 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles slot. Joubert didn’t drop a point on her way to winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Valenzuela clinched the win for North Texas with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Wiegand at the No. 5 spot. Starkova defeated Enderica 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
