Track and field: UNT women defend crown

MIRAMAR, Fla. — The North Texas women’s track team won its second consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship late Sunday evening at the Ansin Sports Complex.

UNT finished with 151.5 points, which was 20.5 points more than second-place finisher Arkansas State. The UNT men finished fourth with 85 points.

UNT head coach Carl Sheffield was named the Women’s Coach of the Year for the third time in his two years at UNT.

Charlotte Wilson was named Women’s Most Outstanding Freshman after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase and placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run.

Ashley Harrison ran a personal-best time of 53.74 seconds in winning the women’s 400-meter dash. Jamila Cartwright followed at fifth in 55.37.

Jo Adams added two individual titles to her resume at UNT, crossing the line first in the women’s 800-meter run after winning the 1,500 meters earlier in the afternoon. Christina Taylor placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run.

The women’s 4x400 meter relay team of Cartwright, Nadiyah El-Amin, Chastity Stewart and Harrison set a Sun Belt meet record of 3:39.69 on its way to sealing the team title for the Mean Green.

El-Amin captured second in the women’s 200-meter dash with a personal-record time of 24.27. Ashley Henry trailed El-Amin by just a tenth of a second to come in third followed by Harrison (24.63) in sixth.

Steven White led the UNT men with a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. White ran a school record 49.93, a time that currently ranks third nationally. Marcus Wooten placed seventh in the event with a personal-best time of 54.00.

Clint Collins captured third in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 47.31.

Troy Taylor crossed the line in 3:52.35 to place second in the men’s 1,500-meter run, while Matt Russ grabbed fourth with a time of 3:53.07.

Russ followed the 1,500 meters with a third-place finish in the men’s 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 1:52.56.

UNT will return to action May 23-25 at the NCAA West preliminary round in Austin.
