North Texas formally announced the addition of Kevin Patrick as its new defensive line coach Friday.

Patrick takes over for Mike Nelson, who retired following UNT’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Nelson spent more than 30 years as a coach on the college and professional levels.

Patrick coached the last six seasons at South Florida, where he worked with current UNT assistants Mike Canales, Mike Simmonds and Frank Wintrich.

“He has coached some of the best players in the nation on the defensive line and sent numerous guys to the NFL,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience and will be a great addition to our program.”

Patrick has coached three players who were selected in the NFL draft, including Jason Pierre-Paul, the 15th pick in the 2010 draft. He also coached current Cowboy George Selvie.
