Women’s tennis: Mean Green earns first victory

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — North Texas beat Southern Illinois 4-0 on Saturday, picking up its first win of the season.

“I am very happy for our ladies today. They fought with their hearts,” UNT coach Sujay Lama said. “We needed this victory to get our confidence back to where it needs to be.”

In doubles, the Mean Green’s No. 2 duo of Alexis Thoma and Kamilla Galieva won 7-5, while Dane Joubert and Anastasiya Shestakova won 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

In singles, UNT’s Ana Sofia Cordero defeated Gisela Baza 6-4, 6-3 to pick up her second singles win of the season. Freshman Alexis Thoma won 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 against Ari Baza, and Kamilla Galieva’s 6-2, 6-3 victory retired the remaining singles matches.

North Texas will visit Houston at 11 a.m. Saturday.
