Women’s basketball: Mean Green rips Rice

North Texas moved to 6-8 in Conference USA play after smashing Rice 66-52 on Wednesday in a game it controlled from start to finish.

With the win, the Mean Green stays in control of its destiny when it comes to earning a bye in the C-USA tournament, which begins March 11 in El Paso.

“Offensively, I thought we were pretty efficient,” UNT coach Mike Petersen said. “We valued the ball and only had 10 turnovers in the game.”

Briesha Wynn led UNT with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Laura McCoy had 14 points and four 3-pointers, both season-high marks. McCoy and Alexis Hyder each scored their 700th career points.

UNT (12-15) flew out of the gates against the slumping Owls, quickly building an 8-0 lead and never trailing in the game.

“The best part was when they attempted to mount a comeback in the second half we played hard and attacked the rim,” Petersen said.

North Texas led by as many as 23 points during the second half and shot 44.1 percent from the floor for the game.

“I simply thought we played really well. It was a complete-game effort on both ends of the court,” Petersen said.

North Texas returns to the Super Pit for its final two games of the regular season, starting with a game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Louisiana Tech.
