MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — North Texas opened up the Conference USA era with a first-day sweep of Middle Tennessee, beating the Blue Raiders 5-1 and 8-1 behind the offensive exploits of senior Brooke Foster.

The Mean Green extended its current win streak to three and its record to 15-5 on the season.

“I’m very pleased with today,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “I think that anytime you can go on the road in Conference USA and win the series on the first day, that is a positive. Credit our kids for coming out and swinging the bats. That was the big difference today. When you put 24 hits on the board and only give up two runs in two games, you will win a lot of games.”

In the first game, Foster broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a three-run homer to center field. The home run opened up the game for the Medan Green and gave senior Ashley Kirk, who pitched a complete game and struck out seven, the run support she needed to seal the victory.

“I felt like I was seeing the ball well, and I had been in a bit of a slump over the past few weekends,” Foster said. “I felt good when I was hitting so it gave me a lot of confidence, it felt good.”

The second game went in a completely different direction than the first as the Mean Green bats heated up early and often, scoring six runs over the first four innings.

Foster continued her offensive onslaught in the second inning with a two-run double and finished the day going 6-for-10.

Senior left-hander Lauren Poole put together one of her best outings of the season as she went the distance, striking out two and only giving up one earned run.

“I went out there really confidently because I wanted to do so well,” Poole said. “Once my team scored those six runs in those first couple of innings, I felt like I had a lot of room to work and breathe.”

North Texas finishes up the series against the Blue Raiders at noon today.
