Mason Fine enjoyed one of his better days of fall camp on Wednesday at Apogee Stadium as North Texas continued to prepare for its season-opener against Lamar on Sept. 2.

The sophomore appears to be pulling away in a quarterback race that never really seemed to be much of a race, especially after his impressive day in UNT's latest workout.

Fine connected with Quinetin Jackson on a deep shot in team drills near the end of practice. He came back on the very next play and hit Greg White for another long touchdown strike.

The sequence had UNT's players excited on the sideline. Fine hit Justin Cain for another long touchdown strike a short time later.

While it wasn't as long of a throw, Fine also made a pinpoint pass over the middle to Jaelon Darden while rolling out that also stood out.

And in other news and observations from today's workout ...

-- UNT coach Seth Littrell was pleased with the way his team handled the heat and the general malaise that tends to plague teams in the middle of fall practice today.

-- Tight end Caleb Chumley was back out on the field and made a nice one-handed catch early in team drills.

-- A scout from the New York Jets was in.

-- UNT cornerbacks coach Nate Brown employed an interesting tactic in drills. He threw the players tennis balls instead of footballs to improve their concentration.

-- One of the first scuffles of fall camp broke out today between defensive back Taylor Robinson and offensive lineman Chandler Anthony.

-- Freshman safety Tyreke Davis had the hit of the day. He leveled running back Nick Smith on a swing pass. Ashton Preston immediately yelled out, "That's my little bro." Davis could step into Preston's spot in UNT's defense once Preston graduates.

-- Senior linebacker Mylam Peters is still seeing time with UNT's second-team defense.

And in some other plays that stood out ...

-- Nate Brooks broke up a deep pass in one-on-one drills. Defensive coordinator Troy Reffett commented "great coverage" after the play.

-- Greg White made another great catch in the corner of the end zone early in practice with a defensive back draped all over him.

-- Freshman linebacker Kody Fulp made a nice play in pass coverage, pulling the ball out of a receivers hands and into the air where Peters picked it off.

-- Freshman cornerback Cameron Johnson made a nice hit on running back Evan Johnson.

-- Jameel Moore broke up a fade to White on the final play of the day.
