Final: North Texas 79, Indiana State 76
Where UNT stands: The Mean Green snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-5 on the season with its win over Indiana State.
Now what?: UNT will host McNeese State on Saturday in the back end of a two-game homestand.
Star of the day: Roosevelt Smart missed a corner 3 with the final seconds running off the clock and the Mean Green trailing 68-65. Shane Temara grabbed the rebound and alertly shoveled the ball to A.J. Lawson. The sophomore stepped back and buried a 3 to send the game to overtime. Lawson finished with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and made all but one of his 3s.
"This is one of those games where you finally start to get over the hump and see all the hard work pay off. I was proud of the way we finished and finding a way to win."
-- Grant McCasland, UNT coach on the Mean Green's win over Indiana State
Our take: UNT snapped out of a two-game slide in dramatic fashion by making key play after key play down the stretch of its game against Indiana State.
The Sycamores had UNT cornered when they took a 62-57 lead with 36 seconds left on a Brandon Murphy dunk. What was particularly impressive for the Mean Green was Indiana State didn't blow the game from that point on. UNT won it.
Here's the story that will be in tomorrow's paper:
The Mean Green made three 3s in the final 28 seconds, including Lawson's buzzer-beater that sent the game to overtime.
Smart scored five points in overtime and UNT quickly pulled away.
Teams are always looking for a turning point. This win certainly has a chance to be one for UNT.
