North Texas announced the addition of nonconference football series with California and Wyoming on Thursday.
UNT will travel to Cal on Sept. 14, 2019, before hosting the Golden Bears on Sept. 10, 2022. Wyoming will travel to Denton on Sept. 30, 2023, before the Mean Green head to Laramie on Sept. 5, 2026.
The school also announced the addition of a nonconference home game against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 3, 2022.
UNT has tried to upgrade its nonconference schedule since Wren Baker took over as the Mean Green's athletic director before the 2016-17 school year. Baker has sought to reduce the number of road games the Mean Green play for guaranteed payouts in favor of playing home-and-home series that will bring higher-profile opponents to Apogee Stadium, which opened in 2011.
Baker says UNT took a step toward that goal by signing home-and-home deals with Cal and Wyoming.
"We are excited to continue to put together a future schedule that will feature home-and-home series with quality opponents like Cal and Wyoming," Baker said in a statement. "Getting quality opponents to come to Apogee Stadium has been a focus of ours and something that our fans have asked for. Following a record-setting year for attendance at Apogee Stadium, we hope home games like this will help us continue to build upon that momentum. "
UNT set a record for home attendance in the second season of Seth Littrell's tenure as coach this year. UNT averaged 22,362 fans per home game.
Littrell cited fan support as one of the big reasons the Mean Green (9-4) were able to win the Conference USA West Division title and earn a berth in the New Orleans Bowl.
UNT will face Troy on Dec. 16 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
