The TWU gymnastics team opened the 2012 season with an 191.450-188.200 victory over visiting Air Force on Saturday night at Kitty Magee Arena.

Four days after giving birth to her son, Austin, first-year head coach Lisa Bowerman was in the arena to make her debut and guide the Pioneers to victory. TWU captured three of the four events over the Falcons with scores of 48.150 on vault, 46.850 on bars, 47.750 on beam and 48.700 on floor.

"It was an exciting week capped off by a good win," Bowerman said. "Our goal is to improve every week, and we did that tonight after comparing the scores from our intra-squad meet in December."

Leading the Pioneers on the night was senior Rashonda Cannie with an all-around score of 38.300. She recorded a 9.500 on bars, 9.350 on beam and 9.725 on vault and floor.

TWU also got solid performances from juniors Bethany Larimer and Kristin Edwards and freshman Spencer Jones.

Larimer posted a 9.775 on vault, 9.600 on bars and 9.450 on beam while Edwards recorded a 9.825 on floor.

Jones made her collegiate debut with 9.525 on vault, 9.675 on beam and 9.825 on floor.

Freshmen Kayla Jones and Stephanie Repp also made their collegiate debuts with strong performances.

Jones recorded 9.400 on vault and 9.725 on floor, while Repp scored a 9.450 on vault, 9.675 on beam and 9.575 on floor.

"I was really proud of our freshmen," Bowerman said. "They performed well and [were] exciting to watch. They will get better and better every meet."

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday when they host a quad meet, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena, against Centenary, Oklahoma and Utah State.
