Cool temperatures drew a record crowd for the inaugural performance of the 2013 North Texas Fair and Rodeo on Friday night, featuring the cowboys and cowgirls of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

In bareback riding, Trey Taylor of Conroe led the pack with a score of 81 on Rusty. Placing second was Colorado cowboy Joel Schlegel with an 80 on PTSD Power Play, and third was Tray Chambliss III of Idaho with a 72 on Big Shot.

In steer wrestling, Graham cowboy Brad Loesch topped the field with his run of 4.2 seconds, followed by Justus Whitcher of Athens with a 5.0. Third place went to Jarrett Parson of Midland with a time of 14.1.

Rodeo’s classic event, saddle bronc riding, featured several exciting rides with Crockett cowboy Tol Cawley claiming the top spot with an 80-point ride on Sugar Shack. Right behind in second was Utah rider Coburn Bradshaw with a 79 on Copy Cat. In third was Louisiana native Kobyn Williams with a 74 on Tater Tot.

The calves got the best of the tie-down ropers, with only two cowboys on the scoreboard when it was over. Jim Mike Hutto’s run of 12.1 was in the lead, followed by Fort Worth cowboy Stephen Robinson in second with a time of 24.7.

Texas cowboys swept the top three places in team roping, with Cory Smothers of Santo and Zack Bocco of Fruitvale posting a 6.6 for the win. Jason Hughes and J.C. Williams of Bridgeport put up a time of 7.2 for second place. Rounding out the top three was the team of Collinsville’s Scooter Nolen and Athens’ Justus Whitcher with a time of 12.3.

Barrel racing saw some quick times, with Teresa Turbeville of Scurry in the lead with her run of 17.34 seconds. In second at 17.39 was Shambrae Williams of Dublin, followed by Dublin’s Shaylee Williams with a time of 17.85.

There were no qualified rides in bull riding.
