Water polo: City teams earn victories at tourney

THE COLONY — The Denton Broncos had matches against the North Texas Thunder and Dallas St. Mark’s at the Flower Mound Spring Classic over the weekend at the Lewisville school district’s Aquatic Center.

Senior Ben Naugle led the Broncos with three goals against St. Mark’s, but Denton fell 15-5.

The Bronco defense put on a show with 11 steals — six of which resulted in goals — as junior Thomas Hyvarinen, senior Michael Adami and Naugle aided Denton to a 9-4 victory over the Thunder. Senior goalie Gus Cocchiarella made eight saves.

Guyer earned two victories at the Classic, defeating Plano West 12-9 and Irving MacArthur 16-3. Sophomore Joseph Mahan led the Wildcats with five goals against West, and freshman Dane Currin led Guyer with four goals against MacArthur.

Ryan squeaked out a 10-9 victory over the Thunder, with senior Alex Worden coming up with the deciding goal in the final minute. Senior Aaron Lawrence and junior Daniel Davenport each had four goals and junior Spencer Anthony added one.

Against St. Mark’s, the Raiders fell 17-1 with Lawrence scoring.
