With their two-game sweep of Brock over the weekend, the Pilot Point Lady Cats punched their ticket to the UIL state softball tournament this week at the University of Texas’ Red and Charline McCombs Field.

The state tournament pairings were released Sunday, and the Lady Cats (38-2-1) will meet Garrison (23-9) at 3 p.m. Wednesday in one Class 2A state semifinal game. Should Pilot Point win that game, it would face the winner between Santa Gertrudis Academy (38-4) and Hawley (31-7) for the 2A state championship at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Lady Cats, the top-ranked team in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 2A state poll, scored the sweep of Brock behind star pitcher Skylar Cagle, who struck out 22 batters and allowed only four hits over the two games.

Cagle fanned 16 hitters and was one out shy of a no-hitter in Thursday’s 4-0 Game 1 victory.

Cagle also went 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs and an RBI in the two games.

Preslee Gallaway led Pilot Point in Game 2, as she went 3-for-3 — including a home run — with a walk and four RBIs in the 10-0 series-clinching victory.

Leadoff hitter Natalie Larson was 5-for-8 with three runs and an RBI in the series.

The Lady Cats will play in their second softball state tournament. The first came in 2005 when they reached the Class 3A state tournament.

The Lady Cats’ semifinal opponent, Garrison, was an upset winner over defending Class 2A champion Crawford with a win in a one-game playoff for the Region III championship.
