When Avery heard the news that Ponder girls basketball coach Greg Gay had resigned to take a job in Grapevine, he knew the school four miles down the road from his home would be an ideal fit for him. However, Avery had one condition -- his daughter, Ellyn Avery -- would need to be his assistant coach.
