Powerlifting: Pilot Point wins regional title; Ponder’s Sooter sets new marks

The Pilot Point powerlifting team claimed the Region 6 Division 3 championship on Saturday, while the Ponder Lions got a record-breaking performance from Brennan Sooter to finish third in the 23-team event at Ponder High School.

Pilot Point racked up 25 team points, while Whitesboro placed second with 16 and Ponder finished with 15 points.

Sooter entered the meet ranked first in the 181-pound class in the region and improved on that ranking by winning his weight class.

Sooter set the regional record for squat on his second attempt with a lift of 570 pounds and then broke the record with a lift of 600 pounds on his third attempt. He then set a personal best on bench with a lift of 320 pounds and finished with a personal-best 500 in the deadlift. His combined weight of 1,420 pounds set a new regional record.

Pilot Point’s John Groff finished second behind Sooter with a combined weight of 1,350 pounds.

Matt Poursoltani of Pilot Point was the runaway winner in the 275-pound class, as the senior finished with a total of 1,900 pounds, 355 pounds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Pilot Point’s Riley Stottle, competing in the 242-pound class, won the event with a combined weight of 1,520 pounds. Finishing second was Ponder’s Chris Aivaliotis with a combined total of 1,465 pounds.

Pilot Point’s Sebastian Guerra finished second in the 123-pound class with a combined effort of 880 pounds.

Ponder freshman Danny Rivera took third place in the 114-pound class. He entered the meet ranked third in the region with a 670-pound total but set personal records in the squat with 275 pounds and in the bench with 160 pounds to finish with a combined weight of 705.
