Football: Raiders fail to find end zone in loss to Coppell

The Ryan Raiders didn’t significantly struggle driving the ball down the field against Coppell on Thursday night.

But when it came to putting points on the board, Ryan’s offense couldn’t find the right combination to pick apart Coppell’s defense.

The Raiders only mustered a field goal in a 21-3 loss to the Cowboys at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex. With the victory, Coppell clinched a share of the District 5-5A title and the district’s first seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs.

Ryan (4-4, 2-2 district) is a half-game behind Hebron for second place in the district. Flower Mound trails the Raiders by a half-game and plays Marcus tonight. The top four teams in the six-team district will make the postseason.

Ryan penetrated inside Coppell’s 30-yard line on three separate occasions but only had those three points to show for it.

“I felt like we were working hard for no reason,” Ryan running back Tyrone Williams said.

The Raiders were playing without three of their quarterbacks. Juniors Mitchell Bridges (knee), Xavier Gray (ankle) and Preston Compton (illness) all missed Thursday’s game. Gray also is one of Ryan’s starting wide receivers.

To fill the void, senior Kevin Ray moved from receiver to start at quarterback against the No. 4 team in Class 5A in The Associated Press poll. Ray completed six of 11 passes for 59 yards and two interceptions.

Ryan’s Marc Orozco had an uncharacteristic night. He missed a 25-yard field goal attempt and a 29-yarder. He easily nailed his most difficult attempt, a 42-yarder that accounted for all of Ryan’s points.

“Marc’s going to be a great kicker for us,” Ryan head coach Joey Florence said. “He already is. … It just happens. I don’t know. We’ll just have to look back and see.”

Williams had 14 carries for 62 yards.

Coppell quarterback Colby Mahon was nearly flawless. He went 15-of-20 for 196 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Cameron Smith had nine catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Ryan entered the fourth quarter only down by 11, but Smith’s second touchdown of the game on the second play of the quarter cemented Coppell’s district championship. It was senior night at Ryan — the Raiders’ final home game of the season.

Six seconds into the game, things were already going in Coppell’s favor.

Reynal Caldwell was simultaneously thumped by two Coppell players on the opening kickoff, forcing Caldwell to fumble.

Coppell recovered at the Ryan 16-yard line, giving the Cowboys excellent field position.

Cowboys quarterback Colby Mahon scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard sneak in with 10:14 left in the quarter.

On Ryan’s ensuing drive, Williams ran into a referee in the middle of the field in the midst of a carry, a speed bump that prevented Williams from possibly picking up more than 19 yards on the run. The drive stalled out at the Coppell 12-yard line, and Orozco missed the 29-yard field goal.

The Raiders trailed 14-3 at halftime.

On every one of Ryan’s drives in the first half, the Raiders marched into Coppell territory before stalling out — once-potent threats dwindling into nothing. The second half mimicked the first, with the offense held scoreless over the final two quarters.

Ryan still is in position to make the postseason. The Raiders close out the regular season on the road next week against Flower Mound.
