Lady Raiders win to earn trip to postseason
Seniors Teana Ogden and Danielle Richardson did what they have done for many nights in their time at Ryan.
It’s a routine that Lady Raiders head coach Monesha Allen is very familiar with — Ogden the guard leading the offense from the outside, Richardson the post from deep underneath the basket.
And like the first time Ryan played the Lewisville Lady Farmers this year, Ryan jumped out to a quick lead and held on for a 46-35 District 5-5A victory on Tuesday night at Billy Ryan Gym.
“The first time we played them, we hit a lot of buckets right off the bat,” Allen said. “Tonight we wanted to do that as well, but we really wanted to start on the inside and work our way out, just because you’re not going to always hit those shots from the perimeter.”
Ryan (14-16, 5-3 district) clinched a playoff berth with the win and kept Lewisville (3-22, 1-7) from stringing back-to-back wins for the first time in district play. The Lady Raiders are currently third in the district standings and three games up on Hebron and Coppell, the two teams tied for the district’s final playoff spot.
Ogden had 11 points and Richardson added 10 points and six rebounds in the victory. Senior Jeffreyonna Holley also had 11 for the Lady Raiders.
Jada Butts and Monisha Neal led the Lady Farmers with 12 points each.
Early on, Ryan’s game plan was evident. The Lady Raiders pounded the ball inside to Richardson, who had a considerable height advantage over her defender for most of the night.
Richardson scored six in the first quarter and Ogden had five. The two continued to put up points in the second quarter, and the Lady Raiders went into halftime up 30-19.
Their output was all but finished in the second half, as Ogden went scoreless and Richardson had only two points. But for a team in need of more scoring threats, Ryan received considerable contributions from Holley and Mariah Young. Holley scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and Young had nine points and six rebounds.
Allen said during practice last Wednesday, as the team played a free-for-all game of 4-on-4 basketball, Richardson stepped up and “dominated” for the first time Allen could recall in Richardson’s four years at Ryan.
“I told her, ‘If you had been doing this the whole time, that just makes us such a stronger team,’” Allen said. “‘Your presence inside is insurmountable. With you, you put us on the next level.’”
With Ryan destined for the postseason, the Lady Raiders will need a strong supporting cast around Ogden and Richardson in order to make a run in the playoffs.
“If we can have that and build off that, the sky’s the limit with us,” Allen said.
Lewisville 47, Ryan 38
It wasn’t for a lack of effort that Ryan lost to Lewisville.
As the end of the game neared and Ryan’s late run failed, a sense of frustration quickly set in for a team still searching for its first district win.
The Raiders mounted a late run and cut the Farmers’ lead to four, but that was as close as it got.
“If we do one thing here, one thing there on offense and defense, I think we’re right back in that game,” Ryan interim head coach Brett Edwards said. “We just had a couple of miscues.”
Edwards coached for the second straight game, filling in for head coach Bryce Overstreet, who served the second of his three-game suspension mandated by the University Interscholastic League for being ejected in Denton’s game against McKinney on Jan. 4 and violating a one-year probation.
Gilbert Jackson had 13 points and Xavier Gray scored 11 for the Raiders (13-12, 0-6). Tyrone Williams had nine rebounds and three points in the loss.
Lewisville (19-11, 4-2) was led by Kaelin Love’s 12 points.
