Current Ryan head football coach Joey Florence is the finalist for the vacant Denton school district athletic director position, sources close to the situation said Monday.

Florence will still need the approval of the district’s school board before the appointment becomes official. The naming of the district’s athletic director is on the agenda for tonight’s school board meeting.

Florence, 47, will take over for Ken Purcell, who retired at the end of 2013 following more than 16 years as the district’s athletic director.

Florence was hired by the Denton Independent School District in February 2000. Nearly 14 years later, Ryan’s football program has won two state championships while reaching the state final five times.

Florence started his career with four straight state title appearances. Ryan won the Class 4A Division I state title in 2001 and then the 4A Division II state championship in 2002.

Ryan finished the 2013 season with a 10-3 record and lost to Cedar Hill in the Class 5A Division II regional final. The postseason run matched Ryan’s deepest in 5A.

Florence picked up his 200th career win in 2013 with a 13-10 win over Flower Mound Marcus. He spent six seasons at Cooper before joining the Raiders in 2000.

In 20 seasons as a head coach, Florence has an overall record of 205-53. He went 152-37 at Ryan, and in his 14 years as head coach, the Raiders never missed the playoffs.
