For the first time since the turn of the millennium, the Ryan football head coaching position is vacant.

Joey Florence took over as the Denton school district’s athletic director after 14 years as Ryan’s head coach and athletic director, and the Raiders are looking for someone to fill the void.

The job has been posted on the district website — the first step of what Florence said should not be a drawn-out process.

“It’s going to be a thorough search, and obviously there’s going to be a tremendous amount of interest in the job,” Florence said. “We want a new coach as soon as we can get it done.

“We want to move quickly. We think that’s in the best interest of the kids at Ryan.”

Florence said the position must be posted for at least two weeks and will not be filled before the University Interscholastic League releases its reclassification and realignment information Feb. 3. However, he said, Ryan should gain its new head coach and athletic director shortly after that date.

The Raiders are looking for their fourth head coach since they started playing football in 1995.

The district’s athletic director said the number of applicants will be whittled down to a small number of individuals who will meet with a seven-member committee including administrators, a member of the community, Florence and Ryan Principal Vernon Reeves.

Florence said nothing is set in stone as he envisions the process of seeking his successor.

“We want someone that believes in the philosophy of our program,” Florence said. “We want someone that’s going to come and continue success. But we want it to be done with class and we want them to be kid-centered. I want someone that loves kids, but obviously someone that can compete at a high level.”
