Lady Raiders remain scoreless in district after loss to Lewisville

The patience that Ryan coach Aimee Foutch has for her young team appears limitless, but lack of production at the plate and mounting errors have the Lady Raiders facing an uphill climb in a loaded District 5-5A.

With Thursday’s 12-0 loss to defending Class 5A champion Lewisville — ranked No. 10 in 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association — the Lady Raiders (8-11, 0-3 district) have been outscored 28-0 in district losses to Flower Mound Marcus, Hebron and the Lady Farmers.

Ryan has committed 10 errors in that stretch. Four were against Lewisville (18-6, 2-1), which blew open a one-run game with eight runs in the third inning and three in the fifth to nab the win in five innings.

Lewisville’s Maribeth Gorsuch (10-2) allowed one hit and had four strikeouts in three innings of work.

“These girls are young, and I know they are trying their very best,” Foutch said. “I think we are trying too hard, though. We have moments when we look poised, then we have moments when we kick the ball around and unravel. You have to give credit to Lewisville; they put the ball in play and found the gaps. We just have to reciprocate.”

Foutch’s crew split last year’s district series with Lewisville, but this year’s roster is composed mainly of underclassmen. That has made things hard in a district that boasts three ranked teams. Besides Lewisville, Flower Mound is No. 3 according to the TGCA while Marcus is ranked 23rd.

Lewisville didn’t let off the pedal against the struggling Lady Raiders. Gorsuch was 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while Gaby Vasquez was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Their big inning was the third, as the Lady Farmers scratched out eight runs on seven hits. They also benefited from another Ryan error — its third of the game. After a Tommi Goodman single loaded the bases, Vasquez cleared the bags with a triple to center field for a 4-0 lead.

Gorsuch drove in the team’s fifth run on a single and scored when Miranda Worthington banked a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right field. After two more runners reached on an error and a single, Jessica Nelson put Lewisville ahead 9-0 with a double.

The score remained the same until Gorsuch’s two-run, bases-loaded single in the top of the fifth. A throwing error at third base plated another run for the Lady Farmers.

Gorsuch allowed just one hit — a single by Megan Durante — in the bottom of the second. She was pulled before Lewisville’s half of the fourth in favor of Makayla Corbin, who didn’t allow a hit over the final two innings while striking out two.

“The girls are trying to stay positive and realize they have to work harder the next game out,” Foutch said. “We turned some double plays tonight and did some other positive things. Now we just need to capitalize on our weaknesses starting with our next practice.”
