VAN ALSTYNE — After Nicole Nordie led Sanger to a run-rule victory against Van Alstyne, Mikayla Stogsdill made sure to finish off the Lady Panthers on Saturday.

Stogsdill scattered four singles, Morgan Turkoly was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Sanger used a nine-run first inning in a 16-1 victory to sweep a Class 3A Region II bi-district series.

Sanger (24-5) will play Carrollton Ranchview in the area round later this week.

Van Alstyne tried to switch up its pitching to give the Lady Indians a different look after its Game 1 run-rule loss and went with Shelby Downs.

But Sanger batted around in its first trip to the plate, helped out by several Van Alstyne errors, and head coach Cortney Hunkapillar went back to Hunter Offill with two outs in the first and the Lady Indians ahead 5-0.

Sanger built that lead on a two-run single by Nordie, followed by Meghan Eilers’ RBI single and Courtney Ford reaching on an error that scored two runs with two outs.

Turkoly and Nordie came through with two-run singles to extend the lead before Van Alstyne came to bat.

Stogsdill faced only 14 batters in the first four innings and finished with three strikeouts and scattered four singles.

The Lady Indians scored once in the second on a single by Victoria Eakman and five more times, mostly on bunts, in the third inning.

Sanger closed its scoring with an Eilers single in the fourth.

With the score 16-1 in the bottom of the fifth, both Ashley and Audrey Burts got back-to-back one-out singles. But Stogsdill retired Downs and Kelsea Bryant to end the game and send Sanger on to the second round.

Meagan Gibson knocked in Offill for Van Alstyne’s run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
