FRISCO — Not missing a beat from Friday’s run-rule drubbing of Bonham to tie a Class 3A area-round playoff series, Sanger’s offense paraded its way to a 17-4 victory Saturday, scoring in every inning and capping the series with Savannah Matheus’ game-ending grand slam.

“One through nine, they’re all stroking the ball,” Sanger coach Jae McMinn said. “There’s not just three or four batters carrying us. Everybody’s been doing their job. I couldn’t ask for a better lineup.”

Advancing to the regional quarterfinals where Frisco Lone Star awaits, Sanger began the first inning with Jaycee Garza’s infield hit and Bailey Ferguson reaching on a three-base error that allowed Garza to score.

After Morgan Turkoly walked, Victoria Eakman’s single up the middle drove in two runs, giving the Lady Indians a quick 3-0 lead. Matheus’ RBI single to left put Sanger ahead 4-0.

“It’s everything for us and it takes the wind out of their sails,” McMinn said of the early lead. “It was big momentum our way. That was really important.”

The Lady Indians’ offense continued to roll in the second with Turkoly’s third home run of the series and fourth of the playoffs — a three-run shot to right that extended Sanger’s lead to 7-0.

“You don’t have to worry about her,” McMinn said. “She’s on it every game. She’s a big leader of this team, not only defensively but offensively.”

Matheus’ sacrifice fly put Sanger in front 8-0.

Bonham threatened in the second with the bases loaded, but Kelly Mardones struck out Kenzie Rattan to end the inning.

With the bases loaded in the third, Eakman ripped a three-run double to left-center, putting Sanger up 11-0.

After a McKayla McDaniel single and a Garza double to right-center, Ferguson’s double down the third base line stretched the Lady Indians’ advantage to 13-0.

The Lady Warriors fought back with four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to put off the run rule, but Sanger didn’t waste any time loading the bases for Matheus, who sent her game-ending homer to center field and finished with six RBIs.

“When they got their runs in, as a coach I was beginning to stress a little,” McMinn said. “But I didn’t worry a whole lot because I knew our bats were going to help us a whole lot. I knew that if we could just get the ball on the ground that the defense would take care of it.

“It was definitely a great way to end the series. I’m glad for my senior third baseman [Matheus]. She made so many awesome catches. She had an awesome game.”

After losing a coin toss, the Lady Indians (26-9) will enter a three-game series starting at Sanger at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and finishing up at Lone Star at 6:30 pm. Friday and, if necessary, 2 p.m. Saturday.
