TUCSON, Ariz. — TWU defeated Grand Canyon 5-2 and Nova Southeastern 4-1 on Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

TWU (9-3) moved to 4-0 at the tournament and extended its winning streak to seven.

Against Grand Canyon, junior Brandie Lander tossed a complete game for her fifth win of the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out three batters.

The Pioneers scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Grand Canyon cut the deficit to one with two-run homer in the top of the sixth. TWU answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Against Nova Southeastern, junior Katie Hines pitched six innings and allowed the lone run for her third win. Senior Karissa Hartwig tossed the final inning for her first career save.

TWU scored a run in the top of the third before the Sharks tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Readicker put the Pioneers on top for good with a two-run homer in the fourth. TWU added an insurance run in the fifth.

On the day, Readicker went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Amanda Ruiz went 3-for-8 with two doubles, one triple and two RBIs. Hines, Haley Colwell, Lizzy Kelly and Kaylyn Vranich each drove in a run.

“Our pitchers were outstanding today and we picked up two big wins,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “Brandie kept Grand Canyon off balance the entire game and the defense played really well behind her. I am really proud of Katie for playing on the field in the first game and pitching six quality innings in the second. Karissa was lights-out in the seventh against Nova Southeastern.”

The Pioneers advanced to the Gold bracket and will play games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. today.
