CORINTH — With every Lake Dallas possession on Friday night, it seemed as though Falcons quarterback Dagan Haehn was gaining confidence.

The sophomore led scoring drives on five of his team’s final six possessions, but it was defensive lineman Marcus Girma’s interception in a mass scrum in the end zone that gave the Falcons a 51-44 win in double overtime over Frisco Centennial.

Haehn completed 27 of 41 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns to improve to 2-0 as a starter in a wild game that saw the Falcons fight back from a 21-7 deficit late in the first half.

“I think we can be a really good team,” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said. “We had a lot of things to learn from tonight — penalties and turnovers. The thing about these guys, though, is when you can throw the ball and score, you always have a chance.”

Haehn did a lot of throwing, but his primary weapon was different from last week when Iowa pledge Josh Jackson caught nine passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons’ win over Richardson Pearce.

On Friday night, Jackson drew the attention of the Titans (1-1) defense and was limited to five grabs for 39 yards and a score.

Haehn turned his attention to fellow sophomore Keegan Brewer, who caught six passes for 111 yards including a 55-yard touchdown with 1:18 remaining in the game that gave Lake Dallas a lead that the Titans quickly answered to send the game into overtime.

“They weren’t gonna let Josh have 200 yards receiving,” Young said. “We knew that would start happening and we told them people would start challenging them to make plays.”

Brandon Simpson hauled in nine catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in double overtime when he broke three tackles en route to a 12-yard touchdown.

Haehn had his low points, including an interception to Brandon Anderson that was returned 65 yards for a touchdown to give the Titans a 21-7 lead with two minutes left in the first half. But he quickly responded with a 70-yard drive just before the half to keep his team in the game.

“When it was 21-7 at one time, they could end up winning 41-15 or something, and it would’ve been bad for us later on,” Young said. “This gives us confidence against some good teams we’ll play in district that will help us out.”

And after the teams traded touchdowns in the final minute of regulation, and did it again in the first overtime, it was a defensive lineman that wrestled the ball away from two Centennial receivers to keep the Falcons unbeaten.

“You have to be resilient and be able to come back from adversity,” Young said. “Teams that aren’t real good, when adversity hits them, they don’t win. That’s really the difference between good teams and not very good teams. We have that resiliency, and that’ll come in our favor later.”
