FORT WORTH — Battling TCU’s home crowd, regional TV exposure and a Big 12 opponent, North Texas fought valiantly but never sustained an offensive rhythm in a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 loss to the Horned Frogs on Wednesday night.
Stumbling out of the gate, the Mean Green had to claw its way back for the majority of the first set. The turning point came with UNT down 13-8 and a Hanna Forst crack shot across the middle of the court seemingly sparked the Mean Green. But the teams remained tight until TCU would closed out the set.
The second set was close throughout as the teams traded kills. With the Frogs leading 20-18, TCU (4-3) won five of the last seven points.
In a do-or-die third set for UNT, the Mean Green lost momentum at the halfway point and was unable to recover.
Carnae Dillard led the Mean Green in kills with nine and added 11 digs. Amy Henard put up 28 assists, and Courtney Windham had four blocks — three assisted and one solo.
UNT (5-4) will play Sacramento State in the Boise State tournament at 11 a.m. Friday.
