Guyer sophomore Emily Hill didn’t need to come up with any fancy words to explain just how much the Lady Wildcats’ winning streak — which is now at eight games following Friday’s 25-18, 25-14, 25-15 sweep of Fort Worth Brewer — means to her and the rest of the team.

That’s because their actions on the court say it all.

The Lady Wildcats (20-8, 3-0 in District 5-4A) used 10 kills and three digs from Hill to control their match with Brewer, and in so doing, have jumped out to the program’s best start in district play since 2009. That year, Guyer opened district at 9-0. This year, the Lady Wildcats have swept two of their first three district opponents.

“It feels good,” Hill said. “Starting out like this gives us confidence.”

Hill wasn’t the only one contributing for Guyer. Sidney Reyes added five kills, three aces, four digs and four blocks, and Tabitha Spray finished with six kills and two digs. As a team, the Lady Wildcats posted six aces and 11 blocks.

“The girls come in with such intent in practice, and our goals are set regarding what we want to do and how we wanted to come out in district ... so I’m glad we are following through,” Guyer coach Addie Mack said. “Right now, our talk is matching our walk.”

Guyer’s last loss was on Aug. 31 in a nondistrict match with Argyle, the No. 5 team in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 3A poll.

Mack tempered her excitement, though, by saying her girls have more work to do if they hope to keep the momentum going. They’ll play at Lake Dallas and Azle next week before closing out the first half of district with home matches against Wichita Falls Rider and Denton.

Brewer (0-3 in district) kept things interesting, particularly in the opening set. After Guyer jumped out to a five-point lead, the Lady Bears went on a 13-5 run for a 15-12 lead. Much of that was the trio of Hailey Lafler, Shelby Alley and Merisa Garrigan, who combined for seven kills and one ace.

The Lady Wildcats responded with a 13-3 run to take the opening set, then jumped out to an eight-point lead to start the second. Mallie Morris had three aces and Reyes added two more during that second-set run.

Brewer took early leads in each of the final two sets and managed a few runs here and there, but never threatened the rest of the night. Guyer led by three late in the third set before going on a 9-2 run for the sweep.

“Brewer did a good job mixing things up, but I think it was great to see our girls manage that over the course of the night,” Mack said. “I see us doing things better every match. These last few matches have been the most consistent we’ve played all year.”
