CORINTH — Lake Dallas coach Michael Young still believes the Falcons are a playoff-caliber team, but a big question looms as senior wide receiver Josh Jackson was injured early in the first half of a 24-14 District 5-4A loss to Trophy Club Nelson.

Jackson, an Iowa commit, was hurt on the Falcons’ second possession of the first quarter when he was tackled from behind on a 24-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dagan Haehn. Young didn’t know any specifics other than Jackson suffered a lower leg injury. He did not return to the game.

“I really don’t know other than they had to take him to the hospital to look at his lower leg,” Young said after the game. “That’s all I know right now. Obviously, to take him there means there was concern over it. Hopefully we’ll know something later [Friday night] or [this] morning.”

Jackson has been clutch for the Falcons. Including his catch on Friday, he has 24 receptions for 484 yards and nine touchdowns. Lake Dallas (4-1, 1-1 district) came into the game riding its best start since 2009 and was averaging 43.8 points per game.

With Jackson out, Nelson (4-1, 1-1) got the best of the Falcons.

Quarterback Preston Haire gave the Bobcats a 17-14 lead with 5:39 left in the game when he hit Hayden Sanders for a 9-yard touchdown. The pass capped a 13-play drive.

After Lake Dallas failed to convert on a fourth-and-short on its next possession, Nelson’s Courtney Miles iced the game with a 10-yard scamper with 2:18 remaining. Miles finished with 109 yards on 21 carries.

Lake Dallas had just rebounded from a 10-0 halftime deficit with 14 third-quarter points. Keegan Brewer caught both touchdowns and finished with five catches for 65 yards. But the Falcons missed on field goals of 35 and 26 yards in the second half. The second came with 9:57 left in the game and led to a Nelson score.

It was the way the night went for Lake Dallas. Jackson’s lone reception in the opening frame set the Falcons up at the Nelson 7-yard line. But Haehn fumbled the ball on a quarterback keeper two plays later.

With less than four minutes left in the second quarter, Lake Dallas forced Nelson to punt only to fumble the ball away at its own 17-yard line. That set up Haire’s 2-yard keeper for an early 10-0 lead.

Lake Dallas looked like it was in business to open the third quarter when Micah Fitzgerald picked off Haire deep in Nelson territory. But the offense slowed and the Falcons missed a 35-yard field goal.

“Those were big to get down there a couple of times and not get any points,” Young said. “Offensively, we just didn’t help out much. We fumbled down there [close to goal line], so that’s 13 points right there we didn’t get. That’s a really good team; we went toe to toe with them and I think that proves what type of team we can be.”
