CARROLLTON — As Hebron and Ryan trudged down the field at the end of the third quarter on Friday night, the two teams were tied going into the fourth quarter.
But after a few minutes elapsed off the clock in the fourth quarter, the Hawks had all the points they needed to hand the Raiders their first loss of the season.
Two big plays early in the fourth quarter lifted Hebron to a 31-17 victory against Ryan in a District 5-5A game at Hawk Stadium in Carrollton.
Long touchdowns by Hawks senior running back Treyvon Hughes and wide receiver Jamal Adams turned a tie game into a comfortable lead Hebron never relinquished.
As for the Raiders, multiple things kept them from picking up the crucial district win on the road.
“We turned the ball over,” Ryan head coach Joey Florence said. “We squandered a couple of scoring opportunities early. We got some penalties, and they big-played us a little bit.”
Hebron scored 21 straight points in the fourth quarter before Ryan (5-1, 1-1 district) added a late touchdown in the contest. But by then, the outcome had been decided.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Hughes ran up the middle, shrugged off a couple of tacklers and scored a 54-yard touchdown run. On Hebron’s next drive, senior quarterback Carson Proffitt hit senior wide receiver Jamal Adams for a 76-yard touchdown reception on a long run by the highly touted recruit, and the Hawks led 24-10.
Adams, who’s ranked as the third best safety in the national class of 2014, finished the game with three catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Hughes rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown to lead Hebron (4-3, 1-1)
“Anytime you got a player that’s as dynamic as those guys, it’s good to have the ball in their hands,” Hebron head coach Bryan Brazil said. “The good thing is we have other kids that can do those things as well, but they came up big for us tonight. It was big.”
Ryan senior quarterback Mitchell Bridges completed 19 of 26 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. But the Raiders were held to 62 total rushing yards, by far their lowest game total this season.
Bridges racked up a good chunk of yards on Ryan’s final offensive drive, a drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass to Willis with 1:07 left.
Bridges sat out one drive in the first half but later returned.
The Raiders’ offense squandered opportunities to put itself in better position early in the contest.
Twice in the first half, Ryan moved the ball within six feet of Hebron’s goal line. The first time, an errant snap ultimately forced the Raiders to settle for a field goal.
The second instance changed the game right before halftime.
After a successful fourth-and-1 conversion at the Hebron 11-yard line, Bridges found Xavier Gray for a short pass. Gray fought toward the Hebron goal line and was inches away from scoring a touchdown when the ball hit the turf.
Hebron’s Jamal Adams recovered and the Hawks kneeled the ball to take a 10-3 lead into halftime.
Gray’s fumble was one of the plays that went against Ryan at very inopportune times. There was a 15-yard penalty that turned a third-and-10 into a first down for Hebron. There was a completed third-and-17 after Ryan accepted an offensive penalty that negated a previous third-down stop.
Florence said he would have liked to score at the end of the half, but it was just one of the many things that didn’t go Ryan’s way.
“Turnovers hurt, but that’s part of the game,” Florence said. “We gotta cover them, and they can’t break a long run on us, either. It’s just a tough night. It wasn’t our night.”
