Coleman’s big night helps Ryan girls advance

LEWISVILLE — C’yera Coleman was so off from 3-point range in Ryan’s playoff win over Saginaw Chisholm Trail on Tuesday that her teammates demanded she give up and start feeding the ball inside.

“That’s exactly what they said — ‘Stop shooting, C’yera. It’s not going in,’” Coleman said with a laugh. “They were right.”

On Thursday, the Lady Raiders likely were begging Coleman to keep shooting from downtown. The senior guard hit six of her team’s seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points as Ryan outlasted a furious rally from Grapevine for a 60-51 win in a Class 5A Region I area-round game at Lewisville.

Grapevine trailed by 19 in the first half but was within one late in the third before Ryan pulled away for good.

Ryan (30-4) came in on the heels of its first playoff win since 2011 and now moves on to the third round to face the winner of tonight’s game between Saginaw Boswell and Birdville.

“I am all about getting the ball inside for the higher percentage shot, but [Coleman] was on,” Ryan coach Monesha Allen said. “If you’re hitting those shots, my feeling is to just keep shooting.”

For a while, it looked like Ryan would cruise. The Lady Raiders hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, two from Coleman, and went on to build a 31-12 lead nearing the end of the half. What’s more, Ryan was getting production from nearly everyone on the floor.

Ryan’s Traeli Calhoun finished with 18 points while Tija Burns added 10. JaKeiya Morgan finished with six.

But Grapevine wasn’t going away. The Lady Mustangs (19-11) used a 25-7 run that started near the end of the first half to cut the Ryan lead to 38-37.

Grapevine’s Tatum Tellin finished with 13 points and Dasha MacMillan chipped in with 10. Jessi Prater scored 11.

But just as fast as Grapevine got on its hot streak, Coleman extinguished it.

She hit her fourth trey just before the end of the third quarter, kick-starting a 16-3 run for Ryan. Calhoun scored seven in that stretch — all in the paint — and Coleman added two more 3-pointers to give her team a commanding 54-40 lead early in the fourth.

Grapevine could only trim the deficit back to nine.

“My shots were falling this time,” Coleman said. “That opened things up even more for us to go inside. It felt good.”
