One week ago, seven Denton-area boys basketball teams were heading into the state playoffs, and after the first two rounds, only two of those seven remain.
The Argyle Eagles and the Ponder Lions will be in action tonight trying to secure a berth in this weekend’s regional tournament.
Argyle, co-champions from District 9-4A, will go up against Dallas Carter at 7:30 p.m. at Carrollton’s Newman Smith High School.
The Eagles are 30-3 and are coming off a 55-25 rout of Terrell in the second round last Friday. Carter is 20-10 for the season and moved into the third round with a 62-39 victory against Anna on Friday.
Tonight’s winner will earn a berth in the Class 4A Region II tournament at Texas A&M-Commerce this weekend.
The Ponder Lions, the District 9-3A champs, face a tough assignment tonight when they take on Triple A Academy at 6:30 at Coppell High School.
The Lions are 28-6 and are in the third round after defeating Kemp 60-44 on Friday night. Triple A is 22-11 for the season and was a 78-51 winner against Gunter in the second round on Friday.
The Class 3A Region II tournament is this weekend at Rockwall-Heath High School, beginning Friday.
