Argyle to face Wharton in 4A semifinals

After claiming their fourth straight regional championship in Commerce on Saturday afternoon, the Argyle girls basketball team found out their path to a third straight Class 4A state championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles (35-2), who have been ranked No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll all season, will open the 4A state tournament in San Antonio at 1:30 p.m. Friday with a semi matchup against Wharton (31-7) at the Alamodome.

In the second semi, the state’s third- and fourth-ranked teams, respectively, will square off as Liberty Hill (35-2) and Godley (35-4) play at 3 p.m. The winners of the two semis will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday for the state championship.

Argyle defeated Liberty Hill and the nation’s ninth-ranked high school junior, 6-7 center Sedona Prince, in a state semi last season en route to the Lady Eagles’ second straight state championship.

Tournament action begins Thursday with semifinal games in Class 1A, 3A and 5A. In the 1A semis, Nazareth (33-1) meets Slocum (25-9) at 8:30 a.m. followed by Dodd City (31-3) against Garden City (27-6) at 10 a.m.

In the 3A semifinals, Buffalo (27-4) meets Mount Vernon (32-5) at 1:30 p.m. Canadian (31-3) faces Goliad (29-7) at 3 p.m.

The 5A semis close out the opening day action with Canyon (29-3) meeting Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill (34-4) at 7 p.m. with Mansfield Timberview (36-2) taking on Corpus Christi Flour Bluff (29-9) at 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, Class 2A semifinals open the action when Martin’s Mill (36-2) meets Weimar (32-8) at 8:30 a.m. with Woden (35-2) facing Panhandle (28-6) at 10 a.m. Closing out Friday’s play will be the Class 6A semis with Cypress Ranch (31-6) against Pflugerville (31-7) at 7 p.m. Duncanville (37-2) takes on Converse Judson (28-6) at 8:30 p.m.

The Class 1A championship games at 8:30 a.m. opens Saturday’s action followed by the 3A title game at 10 a.m. The Class 2A title game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. followed by 5A at 3 p.m. The top two Class 4A teams face off at 7 p.m. with the Class 6A championship at 8:30 p.m.
