Soccer: Martin, Maxson fuel TWU victory

TWU’s Brittany Martin and Taylor Maxson each recorded a goal and an assist Friday to lead the Pioneers to a 3-2 victory over Incarnate Word.

The Pioneers (3-3-1, 2-1-0 Lone Star) got on the board first in the 16th minute when Maxson took a cross from Martin and scored her second goal of the season.

Incarnate Word’s Jordyn Garcia tied it a minute later.

In the second half, Candice Davis scored her first goal of the season in the 60th minute to put the Pioneers back on top. She took a rebound off a shot by Katy Black and drilled it into the wide-open net. Martin gave TWU a two-goal cushion 15 second later with her sixth goal of the season, with Maxson picking up the assist.

Incarnate Word cut the deficit to one in the 73rd minute on Amber Guenther’s goal. The Cardinals got off four more shots in the final 15 minutes but could not find the net.

“They are a physical team and our midfield did a good job,” TWU head coach Fleur Benatar said. “Katy, Brittany and Taylor played a great game and Jill [Fuerman] played one of her better games.”

Incarnate Word had a 14-13 edge in shots, while each teams had six saves.

The Pioneers’ Lindsey Sisco played all 90 minutes in the net for her third win of the season.

“This was tremendous win for us against a very good Incarnate Word team,” Benatar said. “The girls left everything on the field and played hard. That’s what we expect them to do every game.”

The Pioneers will return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Angelo State.
