Soccer: Pioneers advance to LSC tournament

For the fourth time in school history and the first time since 2009, TWU has earned a berth in postseason tournament play.

The Pioneers, seeded sixth, will meet Angelo State at noon Thursday in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference tournament.

The tournament will be held in Canyon at the home of No. 1 seed West Texas A&M. In the other first-round matchup, fourth-seeded Midwestern State will face No. 5 seed Abilene Christian at 2:30 p.m. West Texas A&M and the No. 2 seed Incarnate Word received byes in the first round.

The ASU-TWU winner advances to play UIW at 5 p.m. Friday, while the MSU-ACU victor plays WTAMU at 7:30 p.m. The Friday winners get a day off before playing at 1 p.m. next Sunday for the tournament crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament.

TWU also advanced to the LSC tournament in 2005, 2007 and 2009, posting a 0-2-3 record. All three years, TWU faced Texas A&M-Commerce in the first round and tied the Lions. In 2005 and 2009, the Pioneers advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks before falling to Central Oklahoma. In 2007, TWU fell short in penalty kicks 5-4.

Each of the tournament games will be streamed live at Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham will call all the games, which can be viewed for free. 


The following is the schedule for the Lone Star Conference soccer tournament in Canyon:

No. 3 Angelo State vs. No. 6 TWU, noon
No. 4 Midwestern State vs. No. 5 Abilene Christian, 2:30 p.m.

Game 1 winner vs. No. 2 Incarnate Word, 5 p.m.
Game 2 winner vs. No. 1 West Texas A&M, 7:30 p.m.
