Pioneers ousted from LSC tourney in first-round loss
CANYON — TWU dominated time of possession but Angelo State handed the Pioneers a 1-0 loss with a second-half goal Thursday at the Lone Star Conference tournament.
TWU’s season ends with a 7-10-2 record.
The Pioneers lost for the first time in the opening round of the tournament. In their three previous trips to the tournament, TWU faced Texas A&M-Commerce in the first round and tied the Lions all three times, advancing on penalty kicks twice.
“It’s a tough loss after dominating the time of possession,” TWU head coach Fleur Benatar said. “We made one mistake and it cost us the game.”
The Pioneers controlled the ball on the offensive side of midfield throughout the game but could not create any scoring opportunities against the top defense in the conference. Despite its advantage in time of possession, TWU was outshot 11-8, including 9-6 in shots on goal.
The goal came in the 49th minute when Hanna Horeis found the top left corner of the net from 35 yards out. Lauren Bateman picked up the assist.
“[TWU’s] Brittany [Wispell] and Sara [Deeb] played hard on defense and Lindsey [Sisco] made some key saves in the first half,” Benatar said. “Leah [Kuhl] came off the bench and energized the entire team, and Brittany [Martin] worked hard on offense the entire game.”
The Pioneers were led by freshman Cecily Martinez’s two shots. Sisco played all 90 minutes in the net and tied her career high with eight saves.
“The future is bright for us, with a lot of young players getting the taste of the conference tournament,” Benatar said. “We want to advance to the tournament every year and make it a tradition. We will work hard in the offseason to find key players to fill in the spots.”
