Gymnastics: Pioneers finish third

Courtney Cochefski placed third on bars and Bethany Larimer was fourth on vault as TWU finished third in a four-way meet Saturday at Kitty Magee Arena.

TWU had a score of 191.475 and finished behind No. 13 Arizona (195.825) and No. 25 BYU (193.950). Wisconsin-Whitewater placed fourth with 185.900.

The Pioneers opened the meet on vault and scored a 48.625, led by Larimer with a 9.850. Amy Winczura posted a 9.800 while Kristin Edwards finished with 9.700.

“I am very proud of the vault team today,” TWU coach Lisa Bowerman said. “We defiantly took a step forward. We upgraded a few vaults today.”

TWU scored a 47.925 on bars in the second rotation after counting a fall. Cochefski led the Pioneers with a 9.800, while Larimer finished with 9.725 and Victoria Cochefski posted a 9.700.

The Pioneers stumbled on balance beam and scored 46.100. Spencer Jones led the team with a 9.700.

TWU regrouped in the final event to score a 48.825 on floor exercise. All six gymnasts posted 9.625 or better, led by Jones and Edwards with scores of 9.800. Margaret Mayfield and Kayla Jones scored 9.750, while Winczura finished with a 9.725.

“Floor was phenomenal and amazing to watch,” Bowerman said. “We don’t have depth on floor, but the girls have pushed each other and worked hard. Today we really cleaned up our tumbling and landing.”

The Pioneers will travel to Colorado on Saturday to compete with Missouri, California-Davis and host Air Force.
