SAN ANTONIO — TWU opened the season at the St. Mary’s Classic on Friday and split two games. The Pioneers cruised to a five-inning, 8-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin before falling 8-1 to the host Rattlers.

In the opener, TWU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers added a run in each of the second, third and fifth innings.

TWU’s Bailey Vrazel and Christina Eberhard each went 3 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Jordan Readicker hit a three-run homer.

Junior Brandie Lander made her TWU debut and tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts.

“Everything clicked for us in this game,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “Brandie was outstanding in the circle in her debut and showed that she can be one of our top pitchers this season. Bailey and Christina set the tone on the top of the order, and Jordan had a big hit in the first inning.”

In the nightcap, St. Mary’s took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first with four unearned runs. The Rattlers added two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

TWU’s Megan Schoenherr scored in the second on Kendra Sancet’s sacrifice fly.

Lizzy Kelly had two of TWU’s six hits. Katie Hines pitched two innings in relief and struck out three Rattlers.

“We hit the ball hard but right at their fielders,” Bruister said. “We faced a good pitcher from St. Mary’s, and she did not allow any walks. Katie and Larisa [Garcia] both pitched well.

“Lizzy had a good day overall, [going] 4 for 6 in the two games.”

TWU continues Classic play today with two games against Oklahoma schools, as the Pioneers face East Central at 10 a.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m.
