Women's basketball: Abilene Christian tops Pioneers

The TWU Pioneers made several runs at Abilene Christian, but just couldn’t get over the hump in a 67-50 loss in Lone Star Conference action on Tuesday night in Abilene.

Junior guard Rebekah Cluley scored 18 points to lead the Pioneers, who fell to 6-17 for the season and 4-13 in the conference. Junior guard Tabbatha Thurmond added 12 points in the loss. The Wildcats, who lead the LSC standings at 15-3, improved to 20-4.

Abilene Christian led 29-19 at the half and held a 12-point lead early in the second half before TWU went on a 12-5 run to get within seven. But the Wildcats responded with five straight points to stretch the lead back to double-digits.

Down 48-38 with 8:55 remaining, the Pioneers made another run by scoring six straight points to cut the lead to 48-44. But Abilene Christian responded to push the lead back to 10 and the sealed the victory with free throws in the final two minutes.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, combining to shoot only 24 percent. The Wildcats ended the half with a 9-0 run for the 10-point lead at the break.

Cluley and sophomore guard Toree Mason each had a team-high five rebounds for the Pioneers.

TWU plays again at 2 p.m. Saturday, when they play host to Angelo State at Kitty Magee Arena. The first 200 fans through the arena doors will receive a free “Pioneer Nation” T-shirt courtesy of the Forum at Denton Station.
