Softball roundup: UNT advances to Shootout final

SAN MARCOS — Jordan Terry and Jackie Miller homered to lead North Texas to a 4-3 win over Texas-Arlington on Saturday afternoon at the Texas Shootout. The Mean Green lost to No. 25 Baylor 8-3 in its first game of the day.

With a 3-1 record in the tournament, North Texas will play Baylor in the championship game at 12:30 p.m. today. The Mean Green (7-8) earned the berth with wins over Texas State, Texas Tech and the Mavericks.

Home runs accounted for six of the seven Mean Green runs Saturday.

Terry hit a two-run shot in the third inning against UTA. Miller’s solo home run in the fourth ended up being the game winner against the Mavericks.

Dani Hoff plated the first run of the game with a double. Madison Tierney scored from third on the play. Terry brought Hoff home with her long ball that put North Texas ahead 3-0. Miller hit her first home run of the season in the fourth, extending UNT’s lead to 4-0.

Ashley Kirk (3-3) pitched a shutout through five innings but got into trouble in the sixth. She gave up an RBI double and was relieved by Lauren Poole. The left-hander gave up a two-run double before ending the threat with two groundouts. Brittany Simmons picked up her second save of the weekend by retiring the side in the seventh.

Kirk pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on four hits. She struck out seven.

Freshman Taylor Schoblocher hit her first career home run to get UNT on the board against Baylor, giving North Texas a brief 3-1 lead.

Baylor outhit the Mean Green 11-1.

Baylor responded with a three-run homer of its own in the fourth inning to retake the lead.

Simmons picked up the loss, giving up four runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.


TWU goes 1-1 at tourney

AUSTIN — No. 14 TWU split a pair of games on the first day of the St. Edward’s tournament, falling to the host Hilltoppers 3-2 before cruising to an 8-0 win over Texas A&M-International in six innings.

The Pioneers scored eight of their 10 runs on four home runs.

Against St. Edward’s, the Pioneers trailed 3-0 after the fifth inning. Kendra Sancet got TWU on the board with a two-run homer to left in the sixth.

The Pioneers put the tying run on second with two outs in the seventh. Bailey Vrazel was hit by a pitch before she stole second with two outs, but a groundout to third ended the game.

Brandie Lander pitched a complete game and took the loss.

Against A&M-International, the Pioneers took control in the first inning. With no outs, Katie Hines hit her second career grand slam.

In the third inning, Hines hit her fourth homer of the season to make it 5-0. Megan Leff gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with a two-run shot in the fourth — her first of the season. TWU scored an unearned run in the sixth to seal the win.

Hines started against the Dustdevils and tossed five innings for her fourth win of the season.

TWU’s Lizzy Kelly went 2-for-5 on the day with two walks and scored two runs.

“Brandie pitched well in the first game and we played good defense but did not score runs,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “Katie took over in the second game and we bounced back with a good win.”

The Pioneers (11-5) wrap up tournament play today when they face the Dustdevils at 11 a.m. and the Hilltoppers at 3 p.m.
