Hines sets TWU mark for homers
LAWTON, Okla. — Ninth-ranked TWU hit three home runs and broke two records in a 10-2 win at Cameron on Saturday.
Junior Bailey Vrazel stole three bases to break the Lone Star Conference career steals record, and Katie Hines hit two home runs to set a new TWU single-season record. Vrazel has compiled 184 steals in less than three seasons and passed Kim Nichols of Southeastern Oklahoma State, who stole 182.
Hines hit her 15th and 16th home runs of the season to break the record of 14 she shared with senior Jordan Readicker and TWU Hall of Famer Jami Ingram.
“Bailey is phenomenal and sets the tone for the team in the leadoff spot,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “She is a tough out, and when she is on base she frustrates pitchers and catchers. Katie hit some big home runs this season, and the two she hit today were huge. Both are having a great season, and I am proud of their accomplishments.”
The Pioneers (30-7, 8-1 Lone Star) scored two runs in the top of the first. Vrazel started the game with a walk, stole second and scored on Hines’ double to left-center. Sarah Wittenburg drew a bases-loaded walk.
Cameron tied the game in the bottom of the third, but TWU answered with three runs in the fourth. With two on and two outs, Hines hit the ball over left-center fence to put the Pioneers on top and break the TWU record.
Vrazel also broke the steals record in the fourth when she reached on an error and stole second. She then stole third.
TWU scored an unearned run in the sixth to make it 6-2 before scoring four in the top of the seventh. Hines hit her second three-run homer and Readicker followed with a solo shot to left.
Brandie Lander tossed her second consecutive complete game to pick up her team-leading 13th win.
“Brandie was outstanding for the second straight day,” Bruister said. “She was focused and helped us get the sweep on the road.”
In the three-game series, Readicker went 6-for-10 with six runs, five home runs, seven RBIs, three walks and a 2.100 slugging percentage. Hines went 7-for-14 with six runs, five home runs, 13 RBIs and 1.643 slugging percentage. Vrazel was 4-for-9 with six runs, two triples and eight steals.
The Pioneers will return to action when they host a three-game series against Eastern New Mexico. The teams will play a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday and a single game at noon Friday.
