Softball: TWU splits pair at MSU

WICHITA FALLS — Seventh-ranked TWU split a doubleheader at Midwestern State and set two school records in the process. The Pioneers cruised to a 15-1 victory in five innings before falling 14-13 in the eight-inning nightcap.

With three RBIs in the two games, junior Katie Hines set a new single-season TWU record with 61 RBIs. She broke teammate Kendra Sancet’s mark of 60 set last season.

The Pioneers also broke the single-season team record for home runs after hitting six in the doubleheader. TWU has 54 on the season and moved past the 2012 team’s 52 round-trippers.

In the first game, the Pioneers exploded for 15 runs on 13 hits, led by Sancet with six RBIs. TWU scored a run in the first, five in the third, four in fourth and five in the fifth.

Sancet and Hines went 3-for-3, while Bailey Vrazel and Haley Colwell each had two hits. Jordan Readicker drove in three runs and hit her 14th home run. Sancet hit her sixth long ball.

Hines started in the circle and tossed a complete game for her 10th win. She allowed four hits and one run while striking out four.

In the second game, the Pioneers led 6-2 after two innings, but a six-run bottom of the fourth gave MSU a 10-8 lead. TWU cut the deficit to one in fifth before the Mustangs added two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 13-9.

The Pioneers rallied with four runs in the seventh, including a two-run home run by Sancet to tie the game.

MSU scored the winning run in the eighth after a two-out walk and an intentional walk put runners at first and second. Haley Howerton singled to bring home a run for the Mustangs’ second extra-inning victory of the series.

“One of the greatest comebacks ever, and this team has the best character of any team I have coached,” TWU coach Richie Bruister said. “I am happy with the fight, and unfortunately someone had to be declared a winner or a loser.”

Sancet drove in four more runs in the second game to finish the day with 10 RBIs. Colwell went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Pioneers next will play host to a three-game series against Angelo State. TWU and ASU will play a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
