Women’s volleyball: Angelo State knocks off TWU

SAN ANGELO — TWU was unable to hold off No. 16 Angelo State on Saturday and dropped a 25-16, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22 decision.

Josie Santos led the Pioneers with 11 kills while Marcela Alves and Jaqueline Santos each added nine. Josie Santos added 13 digs for second double-double of the weekend. The Pioneers had 15 total team blocks, led by Chloe’ Tate with seven blocks assists and one solo block. Alves recorded four solo blocks and two block assists.

In the first set, the Pioneers struggled offensively with eight hitting errors; Angelo State jumped out to an 11-1 lead. In the second set, TWU settled down and posted a .195 hitting percentage to even the match with an eight-point win.

In the third set, Angelo State broke a 4-all tie with an 8-2 run. The Rambelles led 19-13 before TWU rallied to get within 23-20. ASU scored the final two points on a kill and an attack error by the Pioneers.

TWU was in control of the fourth set and built a 21-15 lead before the Rambelles scored 10 of the final 11 points, including seven straight to close the match.

The Pioneers (14-7, 6-3 Lone Star) will visit Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
