Volleyball: A&M-Commerce survives TWU rally

COMMERCE — TWU rallied from a two-set deficit but fell 28-26, 25-22, 21-25, 12-25, 15-9 at Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday.

Chloe’ Tate led the Pioneers with 14 kills, Marcela Alves added 12 and Mallory Kuechle finished with 11. Alves led the team with a .323 hitting percentage and 12 total blocks. Morgan Wilson had 17 digs while Kimberly Bell had 29 assists and 12 digs.

After 17 ties and seven lead changes, A&M-Commerce won the first set on back-to-back kills. With the second set tied at 18, the Lions went on a 6-1 run.

In the third set, TWU used a 4-0 run to tie the score at 18 and closed out the set on a 7-4 run. The fourth was all Pioneers; with the score tied at 10, TWU went on a 15-2 run that included 11 consecutive points.

In the final set, A&M-Commerce led 7-1. TWU rallied with 3-1 run, but the Lions posted a .364 hitting percentage to capture the set and match.

“It was a great comeback but we could not finish,” TWU coach Shelly Barberee said. “Chloe’ and Marcela played a great game on both offense and defense. Both had high hitting percentage.”

TWU (14-8, 6-4 Lone Star) will play a nonconference match at Dallas Baptist at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
