KINGSVILLE — TWU closed its regular-season road schedule with another sweep Saturday. TWU defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 25-17, 27-25, 25-23, to improve to 19-8 overall and 10-4 in the Lone Star Conference.

It was the fifth consecutive three-set victory for the Pioneers.

Senior Marcela Alves led the Pioneers with 12 kills, while senior Josie Santos and junior Jaqueline Santos had nine kills apiece. Junior Morgan Wilson had a team-high 16 digs, and junior Kayla Rivero added 18 assists.

The opening set was all Pioneers as they posted a .296 hitting percentage. TWU outscored the Javelinas 15-7 to close the set.

In the second set, the hosts jumped out to a 14-7 lead and had a 24-19 advantage. The Pioneers went on an 8-1 run to capture the set.

In the third set, the Pioneers fell behind 14-8 and trailed 22-17 before they put together another rally. TWU used another 8-1 run to close out the set and match.

“I am proud of the girls for not giving up when we fell behind in the second and third sets,” TWU coach Shelly Barberee said. “We are playing great volleyball the last two weeks, and we need to continue to play great going into the final week of the regular season. Marcela and Jaqueline played well on offense. Torie [Talkington] came off the bench and had some good serves.”

The Pioneers will host Southeastern Oklahoma State in their final nonconference match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
